FIAPAC condemns the current abortion law in the Republic of Ireland with its valuing as equal, the life of a pregnant person, and the life of the "unborn" - as expressed in the 8th Amendment to the Constitution.
It denounces the implementation of the recently passed Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act in respect of the recent case of Ms. Y – a woman who, though pregnant through rape and being suicidal, was denied an abortion in Ireland even under this new law purported to provide access in exactly these situations and was unable to travel for the procedure because of her immigration status.
The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act does not meet the needs of women in Ireland and facilitates human rights abuse.
FIAPAC agrees with the Abortion Rights Campaign Ireland that the case involving Ms. Y is a chilling indictment of a legal system that degrades women's needs and ignores their bodily autonomy.
FIAPAC believes the Irish government has introduced flawed, unworkable legislation that criminalizes abortion and prevents providers from offering the full reproductive health services that society needs.
Our international community of reproductive healthcare providers and activists is horrified by the degrading treatment of women in Ireland, and FIAPAC joins with the Abortion Rights Campaign Ireland in calling for the repeal of the 8th amendment to the Irish Constitution to allow access to abortion services for women so clearly need, in Ireland.
